The Credentials Committee is responsible for managing and verifying who is properly admitted as a voting member at the official party meetings, including the State Convention and State Central Committee meetings. This ensures that only properly qualified delegates, alternates, and other eligible participants are counted and participate in the convention business.
Key Duties
Verify Delegates and Voting Members
- The committee sets up and executes the process to properly admit voting members to the official meetings.
- This includes checking that each delegate (and alternate, if applicable) has been legitimately elected or appointed under party rules and bylaws.
Credentialing at the Convention
- At the State Convention, before official business begins, the committee confirms which delegates are properly credentialed — meaning they are registered, in good standing, and entitled to vote.
- They produce the official roll of delegates who can participate in convention votes.
Handle Challenges and Disputes (Typically)
- Hears challenges to the seating of delegates (e.g., if someone contests whether a delegate was properly chosen),
- Evaluates those challenges based on party rules, and
- Makes recommendations to the convention or party leadership on those disputes.
Facilitate Official Convention Business
- After confirming who is properly credentialed, the committee’s work allows the convention to proceed with confidence that votes on rules, platform items, party officers, nominations, etc., reflect the actual eligible voting body present.
Why It Matters
- A properly credentialed delegation is critical because the convention decides party leadership positions, platform adoption, officer elections, and (in presidential years) national convention delegates.
- Without accurate credentialing, the legitimacy of these decisions could be questioned, so the committee plays a foundational procedural role.
